Multiple Oppositions

Implementation of Multiple Oppositions Approach:

The multiple oppositions approach can be used for children with phonological disorders and CAS. This approach targets a specific global phoneme collapse. A global phoneme collapse is when one sound is substituted for multiple target sounds. This approach is rooted in the belief that addressing multiple errors simultaneously may lead to more efficient and generalized improvements in a child's overall speech intelligibility. 2-4 sounds can be targeted at one time using this approach. The targets should be maximally different.

The ideal candidate for this approach would be:

  • a child with CAS who is 3-6 years old exhibiting global phoneme collapse

  • have a moderate-severe speech sound disorder

  • exhibit at least 6 sound errors.

You know what the Multiple Oppositions Approach is... Now what?

Now that you have learned about the Multiple Oppositions approach, what kind of client would benefit from its use, and saw a short demonstration video, you may be thinking... now what?

The goal of the SLP Quick Treatment guide is to help SLPs learn about available approaches they could utilize in their treatment as well as offering a large list of therapy resources, research for the approach, and even data collection sheets. Essentially, this is the drawer of our "filing cabinet" that is dedicated to the Multiple Oppositions approach!
