Phonological Awareness Approach

Implementation of the Phonological Awareness Approach:

The phonological awareness approach is an early emergent-literacy approach. It is not specific to CAS, but it is helpful for clients who have difficulty with syllable structure and inconsistent productions. The focus for this approach is phonological awareness, or the understanding of word-sound structure. This approach teaches and utilizes certain skills, such as rhyming, phoneme manipulation (addition, deletion, etc.) and phoneme identification.  The goal is to generalize what is learned into spontaneous speech production.

Clients who may benefit from this approach:

  • are between the ages of 4-7 with CAS

  • have difficulty with syllable structure

  • have inconsistent productions

Below, you will find a video further detailing phonological awareness (DISCLAIMER: this is not a video detailing the approach--but rather detailing phonological awareness in general).
